On Saturday, September 20th, First Christian Church’s Sunday Learning Hour Class, People, Inc., took its annual turn serving the evening meal at Central Iowa Shelter and Services in downtown Des Moines. An estimated 250 persons were served tater tot casserole as an entree with bread and fruit salad as a side dish and cookies and milk for dessert. Eleven FCC members, alongside family and friends, each cooked five pounds of hamburger in advance, another five prepared and cooked the casserole at the Shelter; and seven other persons efficiently served the meal to the residents and homeless at dinner time.
Contributing to this outreach event were: Fred and Sharon Gee, John Fairweather and Carol Fredrich, Don and Pat Brattebo, Bill Bullington, Juanita Scriven, John Reese, Paul Woodard, Marilyn Poulson, Tanya Glenn, and Barb and Don Sanning who cooked hamburger; Bill and Le Thomas who did the shopping of all additional food items; Fred Gee, John Fairweather, Don and Barb Sanning, and Steve Davis who did the cooking; and Sharon Gee, Jack and Pat Sink, Jan Bender, Bev Bierma, Sara Davis, and exchange student Tien Pham who served the meal.
In addition, several church members from the Sojourners class contributed money to help cover the purchased food costs. Thanks to all who helped and supported this ministry!
