Christmas Eve Prayer

Wonderful Counselor, help us remember the birth of Jesus.  Recall to us the subversive, upside-down world inaugurated in Christ’s arrival.  Give us up to the vulnerable trust present with the babe in the manger, and help us to hear the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the worship of the magi.

Mighty God, cease in us pride, greed, and fear – all that sustains violence among your beloved creatures.  Close the door to hate and open the door to love all over the world.  Let weapons of war be broken into art and tools – let them be melted down and made into homes for widows, toys for orphans, and protection for immigrants.

Everlasting Father, indeed we are all beneficiaries of your goodness, and it is by your inspiration that we give presents to one another.  Therefore, let kindness come with every wrapped gift and humble affection with every greeting.  Intoxicated by your love known in relationship, may we choose presence over entertainment and patience above bustle.

Prince of Peace, rule in our hearts this evening.  Where there is animosity give us over to confession.  Where there is resentment help us toward forgiveness.  Where there is separation grant us the hope of reconciliation.  Deliver us from evil, and make us merry with peaceful hearts.  May the Christmas morning make us happy to be your children, and the Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus’ sake, and in the name of the one who taught us to pray…

Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name.  Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.  Amen.
