We are Disciples of Christ

A community of faith called to witness to God's creative power in the midst of a richly diverse neighborhood. We are challenged to share in a vibrant Spirit-led common life. As we mature in the Spirit and respond to God's calling, we are empowered and compelled to reach out to neighbors near and far in a reconciling ministry partnership.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a mainline Protestant denomination long noted for its great compassion and concern for people -- all people.

The red chalice symbolizes the Lord’s Supper as the center of life and worship. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper weekly. New believers are baptized by immersion, although we warmly accept by transfer of membership those baptized in other traditions.

Although a Disciples of Christ congregation has ministered at this location for over 100 years, First Christian Church was formed in 1970 when its two parent churches, Central and University, merged. Central Christian was the original downtown Disciples congregation, and University Christian was the church started on this site in 1888, in the new "University Place" neighborhood.

Come Worship With Us...
Everyone is Welcome

Sunday morning Worship is central to the life and witness of First Christian Church.

The Worship Service at 9:20 a.m. in the main Sanctuary continues a legacy of fine music and a traditional format, in a warm and inviting environment. We offer ourselves to God, while being open to new experiences. We begin with a more informal time of singing, followed by a transition into meditative prayerfulness and joyful hymnody. Members of all ages join together to speak, listen, and respond to God, preparing ourselves to return to the world, refreshed in Spirit and ready to serve those around us.

Special worship services offer other opportunities to learn and worship. Special liturgies for church seasons like Holy Week and Christmas enrich our community worship. Occasionally we offer a service with prayers for healing and wholeness. Some times we host a community Taizé worship. Watch this site for notices of upcoming additional worship times.

Our worship spaces are handicap accessible.

A Community of Faith...
For the Enlargement of Life

Church school classes for children, youth, and adults, plus quality infant care, reflect our commitment to life-long learning. Bible Studies and topical classes offered frequently throughout the year provide a diversified Christian education.

Personal interest groups -- from choirs to quilters -- provide opportunities for fellowship, and also the development and stewardship of gifts and talents.

Fellowship dinners and fellowship groups -- for men, women, and youth -- build relationships and weave us together as a community.

Feeding the homeless, hammering on work projects, praying for the hurting and sick, working as advocates for peace with justice in public life, we bear practical witness to our faith.
